How much does a funeral cost?

In order to determine the actual cost of a funeral, we need to have a conversation with you or meet in person to understand your specific requirements. The final cost can vary significantly based on your preferences or those of your loved one.

While we offer example packages that provide an estimate of the costs involved, we recognise that each funeral is unique and can be entirely personalised. At Len Russell Funerals, we provide a customised pricing structure that enables you to select a funeral service that honours your loved one's life and meets your budget.

The main costs which make up the funeral invoice include:

  • Funeral Directors Service Fee. This is the fee we charge for all our time taken to meet with you, arrange the service, supply our vehicles, the provision of our facilities, liaise with clergy/celebrants, lodge funeral notices, registration of the death, preparation of all the necessary documentation.

  • Coffin/Casket. Costs for coffins and or caskets will vary significantly depending on their construction, i.e., solid wood or veneered custom wood (MDF Board).

  • Cemetery / Cremation Fees

  • Clergy / Celebrants Fees

  • Other Church Fees such as Organist, Soloist, Church Hire Fees and the like

  • Certified Copy of Death

  • Floral Tributes

  • Newspaper Announcements

  • Memorial / Attendance Book

The person responsible for the funeral account is the one who signs the authorisation for the funeral to be conducted. The account will be issued in the week following the funeral or may be sent direct to a solicitor who is handling the estate. Please remember that to spend so much that it would mean future denial for those left behind would be misguided. A large proportion of the account you receive are expenses that the funeral director has to pay prior to the funeral.

While we endeavour to provide you with a reasonably accurate idea of cost, there are some items such as funeral notices, which can vary from that which was originally estimated.

Family information required

For every funeral service that Len Russell Funerals conducts, the death must be registered with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state where the passing occurred.

To do so, we require certain family information which requires a form to be completed. Please ask us for this form so that we can send it to you. If you have any queries or require assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to support and guide you during this difficult time.

What to Do Following the Funeral – The Role of The Executor

Because every person's financial situation is unique, it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of all the tasks you may need to undertake. However, after you have handled the immediate responsibilities, you may be required to perform some of the following duties as part of estate administration.

An executor(s) of a Will/Estate is responsible for:

  • Ascertaining whether a valid Will was made or if the deceased died Intestate.

  • Determine whether provision was made in the Will regarding the funeral/burial/cremation.

  • Determine the beneficiaries of the estate and their relevant entitlement.

  • Ascertain the assets and liabilities of the estate. (Determine assets in Queensland or elsewhere)

  • Determine whether those assets/liabilities can be collected by Forms and Indemnities or whether a Grant of Probate/Letters of Administration is required to be obtained.

  • (N.B. – Queensland law does not automatically require a Grant of Probate/Letters of Administration to be obtained for all estates. However, all other Australian States have regulations binding property and assets under their jurisdiction so although you might not require a Grant of Probate in Queensland you may require it to apply for a Reseal of Grant of Probate/Letters of Administration in another state.)

  • Gathering and taking control of the estate property. (Executors are bound to maintain assets in the same condition as at the date of death and to ensure all insurances are maintained.)

  • Transmit the estate assets.

  • Lodge tax return and finalise tax affairs.

  • Advertising for claimants to lodge their claims for debts owing and paying debts.

  • Finalise financial/business affairs.

  • Distribution or transfer of estate property to beneficiaries.

  • Prepare accounts and finalise estate.

It is important to note that the onus of responsibility lies with the executor of the estate to administer it correctly. If an estate has not been administered correctly or a claim is overlooked, then the executor will be personally liable for any claim made against the estate if all funds have been exhausted or distributed.

Many people will engage the services of solicitor to undertake the duties mentioned above and others may elect to undertake the duties themselves.

Friendly feedback from our visitors

We as a family cannot recommend Darren and his team more highly. They were exceptional, both in the manner in which they assisted us during this devastating time but also in the way they put the service together with St Paul's. Highly recommend.

The team at Len Russell Funerals were incredibly professional and helpful. They worked hard to create a perfect memorial for my wife, and connect us with a video service who helped our distant family members be present.

The unfortunate process of arranging my mother's funeral and cremation was made stress free and simple due to the great services received by staff. We were able to organise everything in one meeting that suited all our needs so we could focus on other aspects, organising family from out of area etc. Highly Recommended by the Brighton Family of Yamanto.
